ASHE – Desert Suede
Ashe means “thank you” in Maasai.
Rendered in a warm desert-toned suede, this Ashe draws its colour reference from the shifting sands and earthen shades of the North African desert landscape.
The suede gives the surface a soft, dry texture, allowing subtle variations in tone to emerge as the piece moves and catches light.
The shoulder strap is worked with mixed-colour beadwork, engaged entirely by hand, introducing small concentrations of colour against the restrained desert palette.
At the front, a camel-bone accessory creates a natural focal point, bringing together suede, beadwork and bone within one composition.
Inspired by the traditional Maasai Olbene bag, Ashe retains the memory of its original form while being reinterpreted through Akire’s contemporary approach to material, detail and function.
The interior is finished in African cotton fabric.
This edition carries the story through landscape and material.
Its colour recalls the vast, sun-washed tones encountered across the North African desert, while camel bone and hand beadwork introduce contrasting natural and crafted elements.
It is a meeting of references rather than a recreation of one place: the Olbene provides the foundation; the desert informs the palette; and Akire brings the two into a contemporary object made to travel beyond its origin.
