Amuka -To Wake Up
Sculpted from vegetable-tanned kips leather, this Amuka combines the expression of the human face with a rounded form inspired by the gourd.
The leather is softened with water, moulded by hand over a carved form and left to dry naturally under the sun.
This gradual process gives every Amuka its own facial expression, contours and proportions.
This variation features an ellipse-shaped opening and a sculptural lid constructed from five individually cut and layered pieces of leather.
The layered construction gives the lid greater depth and a pronounced architectural finish.
Hand-applied beadwork appears at the back of the cover, adding a discreet decorative detail that reveals itself as the piece is viewed from different angles.
Its rounded, gourd-like body distinguishes this Amuka from the more structured forms within the collection.
With time and use, the vegetable-tanned leather will soften, deepen in colour and develop a patina particular to its collector.
