Amuka means “To Wake Up” in Kamba.

Sculpted from vegetable-tanned kips leather, this Amuka is distinguished by scarification markings worked into both sides of its frontal form.

The symmetrical markings frame the sculpted face and give the piece its individual expression.

A West African brass ornament adorns on both sides of the face, introducing a sculptural accent against the natural warmth of the leather.

The unplated brass will age gradually, developing its own patina alongside the bag.

The piece features a rectangular-shaped mouth covered by a structured leather flap.

A vintage-style brass turn-lock clasp secures the opening and is fixed to the leather with visible rivet detailing.

This construction brings an architectural quality to the closure while maintaining the handcrafted character of the piece.

The kips leather is softened with water, moulded by hand over a carved form and left to dry naturally under the sun.

Every section is assembled and stitched entirely by hand.

Through this process, each Amuka develops its own facial expression, contours and proportions.
