Aaku – Soot Black Suede
Crafted in Soot Black suede, this Aaku is distinguished by a rich composition of hand-applied beadwork, with red as the predominant colour, accented by touches of blue and orange.
Against the deep, smoky character of the suede, the beadwork brings warmth and rhythm to the form.
Each bead is applied by hand, allowing the colours and subtle variations of the maker’s hand to become part of the character of the piece.
The beadwork extends from the body onto the strap, creating continuity between the object and the way it is carried.
The softness of the suede provides a tactile counterpoint to the intricate beadwork, giving this Aaku a strong yet considered presence.
Inspired by the traditional Maasai Olbene, Aaku is the smaller counterpart to Ashe.
Its name, “I Am” in Maasai, speaks to individuality and presence, a compact object whose character is expressed through material, colour and handwork.
