Aaku – Licorice Black Suede
Aaku means “I Am” in Maasai – an affirmation of individuality expressed through material, colour, and the hand of the maker.
Crafted in Licorice Black suede, this Aaku is richly worked with mixed-colour beadwork, bringing a vivid yet considered contrast to the depth of the black suede.
Greens, deep blues and brighter blues meet red, white, orange and black, creating a layered composition of colour across the surface.
Each bead is by hand, allowing subtle shifts in placement and tone to become part of the individuality of the piece.
The beadwork continues onto the strap, carrying the same language of colour and handcraft from the body through to the way Aaku is worn.
At the base, a small square camel-bone accessory provides the finishing detail.
Natural in material and restrained in scale, it sits in quiet contrast to the richness of the beadwork an intentional punctuation to the composition.
The softness of the suede, intricacy of the beadwork and natural camel bone bring three distinct material expressions together within Aaku’s compact form.
Inspired by the traditional Maasai Olbene, Aaku is the smaller counterpart to Ashe.
