Aaku – Midnight Black Suede
Aaku — “I Am” in Maasai
Compact in form. Distinct in character.
A deeper interpretation of the Aaku form, crafted in midnight-black suede and defined by hand-applied beadwork in predominantly warm orange tones.
Across the body, orange leads the composition, punctuated by touches of green and other mixed colours.
Each bead is engaged by hand, allowing subtle variations in colour and placement to become part of the character of the piece rather than a repeated, uniform pattern.
The beadwork continues onto the strap, bringing the same handworked language from the body of the bag to the way it is carried.
Against the depth of the midnight-black suede, the brighter beadwork creates a striking contrast while retaining Aaku’s compact, sculptural silhouette.
The piece is completed with front and back zip compartments and the signature round solid-brass clasp at the centre; balancing suede, beadwork and metal within one considered form.
Aaku means “I Am” in Maasai.
Inspired by the traditional Maasai Olbene and developed as the smaller counterpart to Ashe, Aaku speaks to individuality through scale, material and the unmistakable presence of the hand.
