Aaku – Shadow Black

Aaku means “I Am” in Maasai an affirmation of identity expressed through form, material and craftsmanship.

Crafted in Shadow Black suede, this Aaku is distinguished by hand beadwork led by light green, interspersed with a considered mix of other colours.

The softness of the green brings an unexpected freshness against the depth of the black suede.

Rather than overwhelming the form, the additional colours appear as accents creating movement, texture and subtle variation across the surface.

Each bead is applied individually by hand, continuing from the body of the bag onto the strap.

This uninterrupted beadwork makes the hand of the artisan visible throughout the piece, with the small variations inherent to handwork becoming part of its individual character.

The suede itself provides a tactile, understated ground, allowing the beadwork to remain the defining expression while preserving Aaku’s compact silhouette.

Inspired by the traditional Maasai Olbene, Aaku is the smaller counterpart to Ashe.
