An individually sourced Rustler denim in medium blue, selected for its 100% cotton composition and regular silhouette, then reworked through Akire’s beetle beadwork.
Across the front, four Akire beetles are rendered entirely in red,two placed on either side.
The singular use of colour gives the composition clarity, allowing the repeated form to hold its presence against the familiar blue of the denim.
At the back, the composition becomes less expected.
A three-quarter interpretation of the beetle emerges across the back pocket, while a second complete beetle appears lower along the denim.
Both are worked in the same red beadwork, extending the motif beyond a conventional placement and allowing the eye to encounter it at different points across the garment.
The beetle remains recognisable, but its placement is allowed to shift.
It is this relationship between repetition and interruption that gives the piece its individual expression.
Each form is worked bead by bead, leaving the variations of the hand visible within the composition.
This piece reflects Akire’s ongoing vision of upcycling—not as reuse alone, but as cultural infusion, where garments become vessels of story, skill, and identity.
