An individually sourced Dressmann denim in blue, selected for its 100% cotton composition and reworked through Akire’s horizontal beadwork.
Across the front, horizontal lines are worked by hand in black, copper brown, brown, white and baby blue.
The colours move across the denim in measured passages some sitting in contrast to the blue ground, others settling more closely into it.
The horizontal direction changes the familiar reading of denim.
Rather than following the length of the garment, the beadwork travels across it, bringing attention to width, proportion and the spaces held between each beaded line.
At the back pocket, the composition becomes quieter. Light-blue beadwork is introduced on its own, returning to a colour close to the original denim and allowing the reverse to hold a more restrained expression.
The original garment remains present. Akire’s intervention lies in what the hand adds to it: line, colour, placement and a new rhythm across its surface.
This piece reflects Akire’s ongoing vision of upcycling—not as reuse alone, but as cultural infusion, where garments become vessels of story, skill, and identity.
